In this episode of the Everything Saxophone Podcast, host Donna Schwartz chats with the members of The Moanin’ Frogs, a dynamic saxophone sextet that’s bringing new life and personality to the world of chamber music.
The Moanin’ Frogs saxophone sextet consists of six college professors delivering virtuosic performances of classical, ragtime, jazz, pop and many other styles in a musical experience like no other.
Featuring all six saxophones from soprano to bass, The Moanin’ Frogs are unique on today’s chamber music landscape.
The Frogs were first prize winners at the 2018 M Prize Chamber Arts Competition, and the individual members boast performances with the Cleveland Orchestra, Detroit Symphony, Toronto Symphony, National Arts Centre Orchestra, and U.S. Army Band “Pershing’s Own,” among others. They also work in contemporary repertoire, commissioning well over 200 works between them.
The Frogs present free and low-cost educational clinics across the country with the support of industry partners, the Conn-Selmer Division of Education, D’Addario Woodwinds, and Key Leaves.
Their most recent album, One Giant Leap, was inspired by the optimism and imagination of the 1977 Voyager I and II spacecraft containing two “Golden Records” that each carried a representation of life and culture on Earth into deep space. The records included the sounds of nature, greetings in 50 languages, and an assortment of music from around the world.
The album includes five selections from the Voyager Golden Records alongside other works.
