Meet Dan White: Saxophonist, Multi-Instrumentalist, and Musical Innovator

In this episode, Dan White reflects on his journey from a young student learning 50 tunes by ear to earning a music degree at Ohio State and touring professionally.

Dan White is a saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist renowned for his electrifying solos and imaginative compositions and arrangements. Hailing from Buffalo, NY, Dan grew up in a deeply musical family. His closest mentor was his grandfather, a dedicated music teacher who passed down his beloved saxophone to Dan. More importantly, he instilled in him a profound understanding that music is far more than just notes and rhythms—it’s a joyful way to connect with others.

Dan is best known as a founding member and bandleader of Huntertones, a vibrant group formed with fellow musicians he met while studying music at The Ohio State University. After earning his degree, Dan spent a year teaching middle school band before making the leap to New York City, where he pursued performing full time.

Over the years, Dan has shared the stage and recorded with some of the world’s most acclaimed artists, including Lake Street Dive, Kurt Elling, Charlie Hunter, Chris Thile, Jon Batiste, Nate Smith, Cory Wong, Dave Matthews, Victor Wooten, Bill Murray, and Bruce Willis, among many others. His dynamic performances have taken him to iconic venues and festivals such as Madison Square Garden, Bonnaroo, the North Sea Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, and appearances on the Late Show with Stephen Colbert.

Today, Dan calls San Francisco home, where he lives with his fiancé, Erica Bailey. He remains actively touring with Huntertones, as well as with Lake Street Dive, Cory Wong, and the acclaimed Kurt Elling project SUPERBLUE.

Dan White’s musical journey exemplifies passion, versatility, and the power of embracing music as a means of connection and expression. Whether through his unforgettable solos or his thoughtful compositions, Dan continues to inspire audiences around the world.
